#EDC534 REFLECTIVE EASSY #2

Reflection Essay #2      #EDC534

Winifred Nwangwu

“If you plan to use any copyrighted material for your own purpose you need to get permission first from the owners of that work,” says Author Richard Stim. “Copyright”, “News” and “Social Media” are the focus of my reflective essay. I always look to anywhere to get my news of the day. We live in a 24-hour news cycle and things happen all the time. It is not enough to hear that something just happened and not follow the news and hear more details and update to the story, and as you share the story you find out that your information and knowledge on the story is as current as when you last read or heard about it. News outlets are often repetitive of events and will tell the same story over and over again. The only difference is that each outlet spins the news to the likeness of their viewer’s ideological interest and beliefs. The other point to make is that fake news has become relevant within the past year and as a result, US recent election may have had an impact. What do we know about fake news? We know they are stories carried by the media and on many occasions do not reveal their sources and are often proven to be wrong. Many times they are countering other stories or simply carrying its own propaganda. (2016

Social Media as a means to communicate was frequently discussed in class and with the use of video presentations the teacher was able to convey deeper meaning and understandings in using social media. There are pros and cons of using social media and its affect in our society. The main advantage of social media is by far its ability to reach targeted audience in a very short span of time. This, as a result of many tools, outlets, and devices by which information passing through social media are disseminated. I find it overwhelming troubling some of the bad things that happen to people through the use of a social media, for example, bullying, gang initiation, political downfall, and a relationship breakup and health trauma. Copyright is a legal and exclusive right normally granted to an original owner of work or authorship for its use and distribution. Anyone who chooses to use someone else’s work must seek permission or at the very least cite the owner's name and information. Noncompliance with this rule may result in copyright infringement which has legal implications.
There are so many questions surrounding the lack thereof or use of copyright. As a scientific research administrator, I work with scientists who are worried and concerned about copyrights and other trademark issues such as Intellectual property. Whether it’s their own or themselves fallen victim of someone else’s. In this class, we discussed the importance of protecting one's work and

how important it is to seek and obtain copyright protection whenever necessary.
“Copyright protects creative expression that has been reduced to tangible forms, such as a book, piece of recorded music, computer programs, screenplay, painting, photograph or motion picture. There are implications to copyrights violations which is why one must seek permission before using another person’s work. http://www.benedict.com/
There is coloration between copyright and Plagiarism in that permission is needed in both situations in order to use the information. If permission is not available one must cite the name as the source of the information.

I have also made some incredible stride reflecting on myself as an adult learner made to adapt new technology means for learning. In this digital authorship class Professor, Renee Hobbs have shown us many ways to learn and reflect as a digital author. During this class, we saw the use of images, sounds or multimedia together as part of our creative expression and used it in ways to reflect our personal identity during group discussions, essay’s,  twitter and blog use.
Although, I had a twitter account for many months before the class, and barely used it I still struggled to connect and send tweets to Renee our teacher. I tried several times but she did not receive my tweets, although little did I know that I need to adjust my setting which will allow others to receive my tweets. I had blocked it from privacy when I first opened the account. I still find it quite challenging to use some media tools even though I have been working and using technology for a long time. I expected it not to be difficult to learn.
